There is a reason summer camps are so popular in America: they offer an amazing array of benefits to children and families alike. The Salvation Army’s network of free summer camps allows kids of all ages, despite their family’s income level, to have a safe, fun, unforgettable summer camp experience and enjoy outdoor recreation, educational activities, and hands-on projects.During camp season, The Salvation Army provides a wide range of engaging summer camp activities for kids, such as swimming, canoeing, hiking, archery, and other sports. In addition, the camps also offer educational and non-sports programs, such as arts and crafts, music, and drama.Kids are encouraged to develop social skills through team-building activities, leadership training, and community service projects. The Salvation Army summer camps provide kids with the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends, and create lasting memories—impactful childhood experiences that too often are only enjoyed by children from higher-income homes. However, many children who live in areas where disadvantage is concentrated have too few safe, close-to-home parks, natural areas, and recreation sites or facilities. That’s why The Salvation Army’s summer programs for kids from low-income households are so important. Our free summer camps also help strengthen family bonds while providing enriching experiences.

This summer, parents stitched together child care to give their kids a ‘space for Black joy’

Fresnel views summer months as a critical time for kids because of the threat of an academic slide and families experiencing food insecurity, which is why Camp HBCYouth is built on the foundation of literacy and ensures each camper is fed breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. Currently, Camp HBCYouth serves mostly Black families and operates its seven-week camp at four HBCUs: Morehouse College, Tennessee State University, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. · “From the lesson plans that they are learning that are sensitive to not just their age, but their culture to the space that we create, it is a constantly reaffirming, grounded space for the students,” Fresnel said. Serving more than 400 kids this summer, Camp HBCYouth establishes their relationship in each community by having Black camp counselors, leadership and mentors that support the safety and well-being of Black youth.Camp HBCYouth charges parents between $50 to $70 a day for camp, making it slightly more affordable than the national average. They also offer a sliding scale fee for camp costs and provide before care for parents who need to drop kids off before camp begins at 10 a.m.This summer, Camp HBCYouth hosted more than 400 kids across HBCU campuses Morehouse College, Tennessee State University, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. One study found that nearly seven in 10 Black families without a child in a summer program reported that they would enroll their child if a program were available to them, according to an Afterschool Alliance and Edge Research survey. The survey also found that cost, transportation and lack of information on programs are the greatest barriers to participation for families; 36 percent of Black parents stated that cost was their primary reason for not enrolling their kids in summer camps.

At US summer camps, kids get a glimpse of their future. That’s what made the horror in Texas so visceral | Emma Brockes | The Guardian

Camps are a rite of passage for American parents and children. That’s why the tragedy at Camp Mystic was intimately imaginable, writes Guardian columnist Emma Brockes Among the many dreams that the US offers its citizens, there’s this: that the American child, around the age of eight, will go to sleep-away camp a few hours from home and begin one of the key formative experiences of their life. They will return every summer. They will learn independence. They will form bonds with people who will one day godparent their children. As an adult, a friend of mine – no kidding – returned to the hallowed ground in Pennsylvania where her summer camp once stood, bought a piece of land and built a house there. In a country relatively short on long-range tradition, summer camp is right up there. As a result, as news of the floods started to break last weekend, there was a frenzy of communication between parents across the country, many of whom had dropped their own kids off at camp the previous week. The idea of any evil befalling your child at summer camp is, in the minds of many Americans, more remote than something happening to them at school. Still, as an outsider, when my own kids got within age range two years ago, I was instinctively hostile to the whole thing.Immortalised in movies like The Parent Trap and books like Meg Wolitzer’s coming of age novel The Interestings, camp is where they first discovered their tribes – in the close-knit Jewish camps of the north-east; in the arts and theatre camps and the YMCA camp network, to which my own kids (after launching a campaign to persuade me) would themselves end up going.
